Welcome to the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Dhaka. The Department of Mathematics is one of the founding departments of the University of Dhaka which opened its door and started functioning on July 1, 1921. From the establishment of the University of Dhaka, as well as the Department of Mathematics students have been awarded M. Sc degree in Applied Mathematics and Pure Mathematics. Applied Mathematics has started its journey as an individual Department from the current academic year.

The Department of Applied Mathematics is an academic unit of the Faculty of Science of the University of Dhaka. Its mission is to provide the appropriate educational and research infrastructure for the study of mathematical and computational tools broadly applicable in science and engineering, and on their use in solving challenging problems in these and related fields. A sound knowledge of mathematical tools makes a technocrat to excel in his profession.

Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Dhaka provides a dynamic and engaging graduate training environment that is especially strong in developing advanced computational methods. The Department currently consists of 11 faculty members. Among them there are 5 professors, 1 associate professor, 3 assistant professors and 2 lecturers. All of them are actively involved in research of different areas of Applied Mathematics.

The Major area of research includes:

Fluid Mechanics:

Fluid Mechanics is one of the most important branch of Applied Mathematics. In this branch a number of articles have been published each ear in the national and international journals.

This year (2010-2011) and in the previous year (2009-2010) two faculties from this department have been awarded the prestigious Dean’s award from the Faculty of Science. The area including Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids for industrial applications, Magnetohydrodynamics, Aerodynamics, Mathematical Hydrology, Bio-fluid Mechanics, Nano-fluids, Computational Fluid Mechanics and More. Students in both M. Phil and Ph.D. level have been doing their research in Fluid Mechanics.

Numerical Methods:

Another important area of Applied Mathematics is the study of various numerical methods and techniques because of the application in all other branches of Physical and Scientific Computations. Both M.Phil and Ph.D research have been conducting in this field.

Theory of Relativity and Cosmology

Theory of Relativity is one of the main research area in Mathematics and Physics. Cosmology is also now a very important field for research in modern Mathematical Physics in the Applied Mathematics over the world. This field of research (M. Phil, and  Ph. D) contributes significant results in Physical Sciences.  

COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS:

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is an inherently interdisciplinary branch of science which has an extremely broad spectrum of applications. CFD become an essential tool in analysis and design of thermal and fluid flow systems in wide range of industries. Fluid dynamics uses numerical methods and algorithms to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows. Few prominent areas of applications of CFD include meteorology, transport systems (aerospace, automobile, high-speed trains), energy systems, environment, electronics, bio-medical (design of life-support and drug delivery systems), etc.There has been considerable growth in the development and application of CFD in all aspects of fluid dynamics. CFD has become a standard modeling tool widely utilized within industry. The correct use of CFD as a design analysis or diagnostic tool requires a thorough understanding of underlying physics, mathematical modeling and numerical techniques.

Riemannian Geometry and Tensor Analysis:

Riemannian Geometry is an important area for mathematical research especially for M. Phil and Ph.D studies in Applied Mathematics. Modern differential geometry now generalizes Riemannian geometry. At present many students are doing their research in this field and contributing their valuable results in Mathematical Physics and engineering.

Financial Mathematics:

This branch of applied Mathematics is a very recent area of research. Very few number of Universities in the world have been conducting class room teaching and research in this area. The department of applied mathematics of the University of Dhaka is going to initiate class room teaching as well as research is this field.

The Department of Applied mathematics will also open Actuarial Science and Meteorology very soon which are important areas of research due to their applications in national and multinational financial institutions and weather forecast respectively.
